Thank you. Thank you very mush.

Elvis Eats

You cannot go wrong with a recipe called “Burnt Bacon Sandwich.”

You just can’t.

Fake but Funny

Besides handling donated books, I also oversee volunteers and “community service workers.” In general, community service workers are being required to do work while volunteers are choosing to do work.

I try not to give my CSWs “crap jobs,” but crap is in the eye of the beholder.

I am also the library’s “Vending Machine Scapegoat,” a title I wear proudly.

I like to remind people, “Change is inevitable – except from a vending machine.”

Debbie’s Dad Does Dally

See what I did there?

I tried to reference “Debbie Does Dallas” via 70s’ one-hit-wonder Debbie Boone. Her dad was used by the music industry in the 50s and 60s to white-out some good songs. Then he became a religious guy. Then in the 80s – I think – he did an album of heavy metal music.

Pat Boone Miracle

Later, SK8R

It took Jeff Gillooly, Tanya Harding, and – to a lesser extent – Nancy Kerrigan to make ice skating interesting.

These two books were in the same batch of donations today.

No sign of the honeymoon tape.

Context, People. Context!

I was a student at the University of Georgia, taking a literature class with Dr. Hubert McAlexander. We were discussing Herman Melville’s “Billy Budd.” In answering a question, a classmate noted, “Billy Budd was hung.”

“No,” corrected Dr. McAlexander. “Billy Budd was hanged. If he had been hung, that wouldn’t have been very much of a punishment, now would it?”

Nearly forty years later, that story still makes me laugh – at least until I realize it’s nearly forty years later.

My friend Sandy Campbell sent this image to me. As you probably know, she’s married to my friend Andy Campbell, who is a minister.

And I was just kidding about your probably knowing…
